Shahrbanou Tadjbakhsh est titulaire d’un mastère et d’un doctorat de la Columbia University et d’un Bachelor's Degree de la Georgetown University aux Etats-Unis.  Elle dirige le programme de recherche pour la paix et la sécurité humaine (www.peacecenter.sciences-po.fr) et le Human Security Journal
Elle dirige aussi un programme sur la sécurité humaine au sein du Master of Public Affairs de Sciences Po et fait partie de l’équipe de recherche "Ethics of Liberal Peace" avec les chercheurs de Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO).
Elle a  été enseignante adjointe à la Columbia University de School of International and Public Affairs, chercheur invitée au Harriman Institute for Post-Soviet Studies,  à la Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) et au Russian Centre for Strategic Research and International Studies (Moscou).  Entre 1995 et 2002, elle a travaillé au PNUD sur différents terrains en Asie centrale, en CEI et en Europe de l’Est ainsi qu’au Human Development Report Office à New York. Elle poursuit un travail de consultance auprès des équipes qui préparent les rapports de développement humain nationaux (en Iran, Irak, Népal, Georgie, Afghanistan, Chine, Inde, Koweït, Mongolie)
Elle mène actuellement un projet de coopération CERI/Université de Kaboul sur les différences de perceptions  de la construction de la "Paix libérale" en Afghanistan. Ses recherches s’inscrivent dans le Projet transversaldu CERI " Sortir de la violence".
