Romain Bertrand is a Senior Research Fellow at CERI since 2008. He got his Ph D in Comparative Politics at Sciences Po in 2000, with a dissertation dealing with the political careers of members of high-ranking Javanese aristocratic families in the Netherlands East Indies in the period 1880-1930. He joined CERI in 2001, after having served for a year as Senior Adviser on Southeast Asian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Policy Planning Staff. A former member of the editorial boards of Critique internationale and Raisons politiques, he currently belongs to the editorial board of Genèses. Histoire et sciences sociales and to the reading committees of Politix. Revue des sciences sociales du politique and of Moussons. Recherche en sciences humaines sur l’Asie du Sud-Est. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and at Oxford (Nuffield College) and a Visiting Professor at Fudan University (Shanghaï) and at the New School for Social Science Research (NYC). He recently gave talks at Cornell (Blumenthal Lectures), at the New School (Hans Speier Lectures) and the keynote lecture at the yearly meeting of the Koninklijk Nederlands Historisch Genootschap. At Sciences Po, he runs with Stephane Van Damme the research seminar “Re-staging Modernity : Imperial Encounters as Sites of Knowledge”.
