Holds degrees from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (1966), the University of Paris I-Sorbonne (sociology) and a doctorate in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University René Descartes (1982) for a dissertation on “Radical American traditions and the social movements of the 1960s in the United States” under the supervision of Raymond Aron.
Joined CERI in 1977 and has worked subsequently on the Democratic Party and the left in the United States, Latin American politics, the history of ideas and political thought. With Nicole Racine of the CEVIPOF and Michel Trebitsch of the Institut d’Histoire du Temps Présent (IHTP), was part (1989-2002) of the joint IHTP-CNRS research group on "Comparative history of intellectuals”. Collaborates with the group on “History of Ideas and Political Thought” at CEVIPOF with Gil Delannoi and Alexandre Escudier and currently works on the political thought of Michel Foucault.
