Born in Romania in 1933 and arrived in France as a student in 1948, Pierre Hassner attended the Ecole Normale Supérieure between 1952 and 1955. He became a Professeur Agrégé in Philosophy in 1955.
A Rockefeller Fellow in the United States between 1956 and 1959, he subsequently graduated from the University of Chicago and from Sciences Po in Paris. He has been with CERI since 1959 as Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow and Emeritus and became Associate Research Fellow after retiring.
He taught International Relations at Sciences Po and the Johns Hopkins University, Bologna between 1964 and 2003. His other several teaching positions include the University of Chicago (1998), Harvard University (2000), the Geneva Institut des Hautes études Internationales (2004-2005), the University of Quebec at Montreal (2007), and Claremont Mckenna College, California (2009).
A member of the Editorial Board of Survival and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Pierre Hassner was awarded the Alexis de Tocqueville Prize in 2003 and was made Doctor Honoris Causa of UQAM in 2008.
His work on international relations and geopolitics has been deeply influenced by his early experience as a student of Philosophy.
