Bastien Irondelle is a Tenured Research Fellow at the Center for International Studies and Research, CERI-Sciences Po (www.ceri-sciences-po.org) and Lecturer in Sciences Po since 2005. He was the Deakin Fellow at the European Studies Centre, St Antony’s College and Research Visiting Fellow, Changing Character of War Programme, University of Oxford (2009-2010). He previously held academic and research positions at the University of Lille and the French Institute of International Relations, the European Studies Center in Sciences Po. He studied History, Political Science, International Relations and Strategic Studies from the University Paris I Sorbonne and Sciences Po Paris and he obtained his Ph D in Political Science from Sciences Po. Bastien’s doctoral dissertation -an in-depth analysis of the decision-making process of the French military adaptation after the Cold War, with a focus of the 1996 reform (end of the conscription)- won the 2004 Award for the best dissertation in the fied of defence from the National Institute for Defence Studies. His work sits at the intersection of international relations, strategic studies, political sociology and public policy analysis. Bastien’s research interests include military transformation and armed forces reforms in Europe (mainly France, UK and Germany), changes in the governance of the defence field, private military companies, NATO. He is interested in Europan Security and Defence Policy with a focus on public opinion, ESDP networks, Europeanization and agenda-setting. More general areas of interest include international security, international relations theory and foreign policy analysis. He is currently working on his research for his next book-length project on the comparison of French and British grand strategies after the cold war. Bastien serves at the Editorial board of Critique Internationale and Cultures & Conflits.
