Riva Kastoryano hold an undergraduate degree in Economics (Paris-Sorbonne), a PhD in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris and passed her Habilitation at the Institut of Political Studies (IEP - Sciences Po paris).
She was a lecturer at Harvard University in the department of Social Studies from 1984 to 1987, and she has been teaching at Sciences Po since 1988.
She has been a fellow at the Institut for Advanced Studies at Princeton (1997), at the Wissenschaftskolleg of Berlin (1998) and at the Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University (2003-2004).

Since 2005, she has been a visiting professor at the New School for Social Research in New York
